My Testimony of God Saving Me

I grew up Catholic. Really Catholic.

I attended Catholic schools for all but 3rd grade and Junior and Senior years of high school.

For a while I considered becoming a nun.

I started reading the Catholic Bible almost daily from about 11 or 12 yoa.

Each time I read it I made sure I read the prayers on the inside covers of the Bible

According to Catholicism, ‘The Prayer Before Reading the Holy Scriptures gives an indulgence of

5 YEARS! (meaning a shorter stay in purgatory after you die)

(To those not familiar with the Catholic Church: to Rome, the atonement of Jesus Christ is not enough! You have to work your way into heaven. Jesus only accomplished opening up the gates by His death. They say you have to do your 1% at least to get into purgatory, then heaven will follow. Eventually. )

(I am leaving out the actual prayer)

Now, reading further inside the cover of my Catholic Bible:

‘and a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, if the prayer has been recited daily for a month’  (wonder what the ‘usual conditions’ means?!)

‘Preces et Pia Opera, 265 ‘ (whatever THAT means!) 😉

THEN in the BACK of that Bible it says THIS-(again, minus the actual prayer)

‘Prayer after Reading the Holy Scriptures-Prayer of St. Bede the Venerable,

and it gives the prayer…

and the INDULGENCE for reading the Scriptures -according to

Pope Leo XII is this

‘Pope Leo XII granted to the faithful who spend at least a quarter of an hour in reading the Holy Scriptures with the veneration due to the divine word and as spiritual reading, an indulgence of 300 days.

Preces et Pia Opera, 654 ‘ unquote  ~(whatever!)~

Wow, 5 years and 300 days! for saying the prayers and reading the Bible for 15 min.

good deal!! 😉

SAY THOSE PRAYERS, and you are really off to a great start on your day!

As well as  your eternity!! 😉

One wouldn’t want just the Word of God floating in the mind after reading it,

don’t ya know?! 😉 You need to be crunching numbers and figuring out your indulgences.

ONE DECEMBER night in 1975, at  21 yoa, I was unexpectedly and suddenly apprehended by God! He took me by surprise.

He rescued me from His coming wrath, which I totally deserved because of my sins.

He brought me to Himself by regenerating me and causing me to believe solely on Jesus for my salvation.

I believed on Him as the Word commands we are to do in order to be saved. It’s that simple!

My former FILTHY rags of WORKS and EFFORTS at appeasing God concerning my sin were totally WORTHLESS.

By His sovereign choosing and power, He regenerated me.

And He did this when He wanted to do so.

I had been spiritually dead up to that point in time. And I didn’t know it!

I was filled with an amazing joy and peace!

Before that moment in time,

I had NO DESIRE for a God who didn’t NEED ME to HELP Him save me.

Now by His sovereignty and absolute goodness and compassion and mercy,

I was washed in His blood ( the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin) and redeemed and given a new nature.

I was no longer His enemy! I had became His child!

In doing His work in my heart He set me free from slavery to sin and false religion.

I no longer need to calculate how soon I could get out of a mythological purgatory!

And since the Holy Spirit took residence within me at that moment, to seal me,  I started to understand what I was reading in the Bible.

Isn’t He good!?

It is pretty wonderful now to have a relationship with God that includes being faithfully led by Him in truth.

And truth always points to Jesus and His work of redemption on the cross. Truth never negates the work of Christ with a works based gospel.

I now have access to the throne of mercy!

No rituals involved!

Needless to say, I was thrilled to throw away all of my worthless rosaries and scapulars and prayer cards, and medals.

How exhausting it is to try to appease God through endless man made, demon inspired deceptive rituals!

I exchanged the LIES of Satan for the TRUTH of God’s Word!!

He took the filthy robes of my own pitiful righteousness and in His sovereignty.

He  clothed me in His righteousness.

My salvation is all because of Him.

God is an awesome and sovereign God!

    Hi Laura,

I hope that things are going well for you. I certainly do miss you. You are always in my prayers.

I was wondering if I can put your testimony on the Testimonies page of my blog? I think it’s just wonderful.

    Love you Sister!

    Hi Laura! 🙂

  3. laura754 says:

Kari, you certainly may use it. I hope it brings glory to God in some way.

    Hi Dawnmarie! 🙂

    I certainly miss you all.
    been super busy!!

I have been thinking of updating you all in an email very soon.
    but for now… 🙂
just know for now that I think of you ladies and miss fellowshipping with you all.
Keep my family and I in prayer please.
    we’re going through the fire.

But I know that God is sovereign!! Amen?!

  4. dawnmarie4 says:

Laura. I will be praying for you and your family. And yes…AMEN!!! 🙂

  5. Kari says:

    Hi Laura,

You most certainly will get extra prayers from me! Kitty and I were just discussing how when we are going through the fire, we must remember to give God thanks, even when we feel jipped. We must rest in the fact that He is our Father and He would never hurt His children, He is refining us for His Glory! For that I say “thank you, Lord, even though it hurts right now.”

Plus, He gave us each other, to hold each other up in prayer when we feel too tired to pray, to love us when we don’t feel like loving, to laugh with us when we feel like screaming. Therefore, I feel it is my Sisterly duty to give you this joke:

Two elderly women were out driving in a large car – both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself ‘I must be losing it. I could have sworn we just went through a red light.’

After a few more minutes, they came to another intersection and the light was red. Again, they went right through. The woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous

At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was red and they went on through. So, she turned to the other woman and said, ‘Mildred, did you know that we just ran through three red lights in a row? You could have killed us both!’

Mildred turned to her and said, ‘Oh, no, am I driving ?’

I love you Laura!! Looking forward to the update!

    LOVED the joke! 🙂
    that was a good one!

kinda scary that, Lord willing, we will get to the age where our thinking goes on the blink.

so sorry it took so long to reply to this.
read it and never had time to respond.

    Time is fleeting!!

    I loved your encouraging words.
being refined by God is a good thing in light of eternity.
though it doesn’t seem pleasant at the time.

Kari I am glad you are my ‘sister’. I covet your prayers. And I miss the time of more frequent
interactions with you. And that goes for the rest of you too!

I am going to post a sermon link—- from Jeff Arthur, of course. 😉

I have listened to some more of his sermons and have not had a chance to post those. I
will get around to them when I can. For now I am posting one that I found especially
good for explaining the new birth.

    catch you all later!!

  7. I loved reading this! It was very nice to read. Although I am not an ex Catholic, my best friend is currently part of the Catholic Church. I’ve tried reading up on the RCC as much as possible so that my friend cannot lure me into the same deception that she’s in. I’ve just recently began to find all these things that Catholics can do to rid their time in purgatory such as climbing the stairs on your knees at certain places. This is the first time that I’ve heard about time out of purgatory by reading scriptures. It seems that the Vatican doesn’t really want you to soak up what’s in the Word, just read it to make yourself feel holy and feel like you have a chance out of purgatory. I thank the Lord that you found your way out of the Roman Catholic Church!

    In Christ,

  8. laura754 says:

    Good morning ocnbreathesslty! 🙂

thanks for stopping by and reading.

I praise God that you were somehow blessed by reading my testimony.
God was so good to me.

I had no chance of figuring out how to be saved.
    He just did it!

May He work in your friends heart today! 🙂

Just keep faithfully sharing with your friend the truth of putting faith in the finished work of Christ.

maybe share the post I have about the blood of Jesus, with this friend.

all over the internet is good resources.
but the most important and best is the simple Word!
    have a great day!
